My sister is amazing. She can do anything that requires your smarts. She has always been book smart and good at everything. I used to be so jealous of her because she was so good at school, all subjects. She would have the best grades in English, then Math, then Science, then blow everyone away in her artwork. I seriously have never met anyone that could use their left and right brain pretty equally. She got her PhD this year from the University of Texas. My sister can do everything I can’t, and she may possibly be my other half.
A while back I asked her if she would ever want a tattoo. She said maybe a lizard because of her research with them at UT, or something else. But she wasn’t sure. So on her 25th birthday I told her for her present I would buy her a tattoo with me. But it had to be matching, she got to chose what and where it went. She picked this, the chemical structure for Dopamine.

Most people ask what it is when they see it. When we tell them what it is, they look at us like we are speaking another language. I explain it in my own way, I call it laymen’s terms compared to what Lauren says in her science speak. I asked her to tell me why she picked this in her own words:
“To me, dopamine emphasizes the importance of balance to my life. While dopamine evolved to reward us for doing something evolutionarily fit, like falling in love or eating something delicious, the dopamine system can also be hijacked by drugs or gambling to ruin your brain chemical balance to where nothing is rewarding anymore. Balance is key to brain happiness.”
Dopamine, for those that don’t know is the chemical in your brain that is the balance, like she said. It’s what makes drug addicts, addicts. It’s what makes us want to do something over if we enjoyed it. It’s a crazy chemical in our brain that we sometimes don’t give credit for and can easily take advantage of.
This is one of my favorite matching tattoos that I have.
That’s right, we’re dope.
Lauren, I love you more than tattoos. <3
